The GERMAN-CANADIAN BUSINESS PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATION

was established in 1967. Members, both men and women, are German-Canadian business and professional people. The purpose of the Association is the cultivation of friendship and cooperation among us. We are also involved in community projects, i.e. Christkindl Market, German Pioneers Day, Oktoberfest and the co-operation of German-Canadian clubs.

Although the Association is officially bilingual and either German or English is the accepted mode of communication, the ability to understand spoken German is an asset, but no longer a prerequisite for new members. To our monthly meetings we invite well-known representatives of government, business and other areas of mutual interest to give lectures on various topics. On occasion, one of our own members will speak on his or her area of expertise. These lectures give the members valuable insights into the fabric of Canadian society.

In 1974 the German Language Contest was initiated. Each year in May, students of the German Language in the Region of Waterloo are invited to participate in this competition. Also, high school students who scored highest in their class in first and second-year German receive awards. Trophies, certificates and valuable cash awards are presented to the winning students at the Wilfrid L. Bitzer Event celebrated in October with an attendance of over 300 guests.

As of 1999, university students at the top of their class in German at the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University, have been given substantial cash prizes. Generous sponsors, companies and individuals, make this event possible. The Association in conjunction with the cities of Kitchener and Waterloo participates in activities that help preserve the German heritage.
