Prince Edward County, 2 June, 2001
(Bay of Quinte - Belleville/Picton)
We had just about a busload of members
and spouses or other family to tour one of our Ontario historic tourist sites.
Balance of the space in the bus was needed for, well you know what. No pictures,
but surely someone has taken one or two we can add to this website.
Harry Drung organized and led this trip
with his usual nonchalance, jokes, and, well, he knew where he was going too.
Starting out at the Concordia Club at
8:00 on a Saturday Morning, we stopped a little after 10, somewhere near Trenton
at the Big Apple for a 40 minute break and tour of the facilities. Most
of us were pretty silent thus far this early on a Saturday Morning, but here we
woke up. Climbed into the apple, had a coffee and apple-pie and enjoyed the
fresh air.
Next a leisurely drive along the
Loyalist Parkway and a lunch stop at Angelines in Bloomfield for
a delightful cuisine franaise Hot Buffet prepared by Austrian-born Chef
Willie Fida and Swiss born wife Monica. Anyone, who will come back to continue
to explore this lovely peninsula will absolutely want to stop here again.
A short trip on the bus brought us to
Sandbanks Provincial Park for a relaxing post-lunch walk across the dunes
and along one of the finest beaches of Lake Ontario.
Next we stopped at one of the many
museums on the Peninsula: the Rose House Museum which is dedicated to
settlers who were de-commissioned German Mercenaries of the British Crown. They
were rewarded for their services during the American Revolutionary War with land
grants in the County. Here we saw artifacts of the early 1800s and the original
1804 Rose Farm Deed.
Next a stop at the County Cider
Company for some cider tasting, while enjoying the beautiful view over the
country side with the lake in the distance. Apparently there was not enough
alcohol in the Cider so we made another stop at the Glenora Springs Micro
Brewery. We lingered a while to soak in the vapour and a glass or two.
Keeping in step with the need for
outdoor recreation, we stopped next for a picnic at the Lake of the Mountain
recreation area, admiring the lake high above Lake Ontario and the Glenora Car
Ferry below. Here, some of the specialties taking up space in the bus were
brought out and expertly laid out for a picnic supper with ambience.
Last stop was at Tim Hortons for a
caffeine fix at the 401 Trenton Truck Stop and for the necessary
preparation to consume the rest of the liquids on the bus on the way home. The
arrival schedule called for 9:30 pm back at the Concordia Club parking lot. I
dont remember, if we were on time. Nor did it matter much ..
Based on Harrys notes, itinerary and
some pleasant memories. Thanks Harry.
