Christkindl Market in Kitchener, Ontario
Kitchener started it all
Christkindl Market has become a celebrated event
in Kitchener since it's beginning in 1996. Located in the Rotunda and also
outside of Kitchener's City Hall, the boutiques offer Christmas ornaments,
chocolates, toys and gifts for all ages. There are exhibits and food
booths (including some unique
refreshments like "Glhwein"), with
delicacies to suit every taste.
It starts with a fascinating candlelight procession with Maria and
Joseph, a real donkey (and llama) and has shows, music, carols, and activities throughout
its 4 days in December. The market was the idea and initiative of one of our members, Tony Bergmeier.
The market grows ever more successful with every year and in the short time of
its existence has become a tradition for Kitchener residents and the growing
numbers of visitors.
Many of our members
contribute to the success of this event, and our Association further adds
to the spirit with an outdoor booth,
offering delicious lintel soup, Bienenstich and other baked specialties, soft drinks, hot chocolate, and
coffee.
